Caregiver for Teen with Non-Speaking Autism | Ditmas Park, Brooklyn | $35/Hour

Position Overview

Join a dynamic, collaborative team supporting an exceptional 16-year-old with non-speaking autism who communicates through typing and letterboard. This unique opportunity offers extensive training in innovative special education techniques while working with a family of educators dedicated to their son's development and future success.

Family Environment

You'll work with a bright, determined teenager who aspires to attend college. He has non-speaking autism with OCD-like behaviors and requires a firm but patient presence who believes in his intelligence. The family has structured the schedule into focused engagement periods to optimize interaction and learning. Young men are especially encouraged to apply as he responds particularly well to them, though all qualified candidates are welcome.

Schedule & Location

Schedule: 5 days per week (30 hours base) with 4-7 hour shifts between 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM, plus Sundays 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM. Additional hours available for candidates with education or special education degrees.

Location: Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, easily accessible by public transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide transportation and communication support at therapy appointments (speech, OT, PT)

  • Engage in recreational activities including trampoline, board games, walks, and hikes

  • Assist with basic meal preparation following dietary guidelines (gluten-free, casein-free, sugar-free, soy-free)

  • Support family during meal and family times

  • Help develop and improve core life skills

  • Collaborate with team of teachers, therapists, and family members

  • Maintain engagement without defaulting to screen time

  • Support educational activities and homework as needed

Requirements

  • Experience working with children, preferably with special needs background or deep interest

  • Ultra-reliable with consistent attendance and punctuality

  • Patient, optimistic, and quick learner

  • Physical ability to support active teenager and participate in physical activities

  • Open to feedback and collaborative approach

  • Ability to be fully present and engaged during support periods

  • Must be comfortable following specific dietary requirements

  • Valid driver's license, family vehicle is provided

  • CPR certification preferred

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly rate: $35/hour base rate
